North Coast

The best wetlands in the North region. On the north coast route we will be able to visit one of the three places: Caminha; Esposende or Barrinha de Esmoriz. The longer route which visits all three locations is also an option, to make the most of your experience.

The first two sites are estuaries of the rivers Minho and Cávado. Here we will find a great wealth of waders, seabirds and birds of prey.

Further south, the Barrinha de Esmoriz, a brackish water lagoon, that extends down to the sea, allowing for the occurrence of more than 200 species. Trás-os-Montes and Alto-Douro region.


Resident: Spoonbill, Starling, Shag, Kentish Plover, Peregrine, Cetti's Warbler, Hoopoe, Hobby, Iberian Grey Shrike, Cattle Egret, Zitting Cisticola, Cirl Bunting, Crag Martin, Night Heron.

Breeding: Red-rumped Swallow, Pallid Swift, Honey Buzzard, Iberian Chiffchaff, Melodious Warbler, Wryneck, Black-winged Stilt, Purple Heron, Golden Oriole.

Wintering: Osprey, Common Whimbrel, Common Greenshank, Oystercatcher, Ring-billed Gull, Great Black-backed Gull, Black-tailed Godwit, Curlew Sandpiper, Glossy Ibis, Common Loon, Grey Plover, Red Knot, Bar-tailed Godwit, Merlin.

Best time to visit: greater number of birds in winter, despite this, there is a range of interesting species to visit throughout the year.
